Bali, an island province of Indonesia, is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. Bali’s history dates back to 3000BC, with communities settling down in Bali during the Stone Age. Since then Bali has seen various interesting and revolutionary chapters in its history, which has moulded Bali to the multi-ethic and multi-religious island it is today. With historic influences from Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the colonial powers, Bali’s history is indeed vibrant and intriguing.
Indian settlers brought with them Hinduism and Buddhism to the island of Bali, which significantly influenced the architecture, lifestyle and literature of Bali to the extent that the Kingdom of Bali was predominantly Hindu. The strong Hindu and Buddhist influence on the island is still very prominent today as well. These Indianized Kingdoms lasted several centuries till the 14th Century, which marked the beginning of the Majapahit Era of Bali. This was due to the Majapahit defeating the traditional Bali kingdoms, and thereafter the Majapahit introduced a strong Javanese culture to Bali. Throughout the Majapahit Era, Bali was an island of importance to the European Powers, and finally in 1846 Bali was captured by the Dutch. Bali was captured by Imperial Japan during the Second World War, however after the war the Dutch resumed control over Bali. Bali gained independence in 1949, and has ever since prospered as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious tourist destination, with a lot to offer.
