Visited by people from all corners of the earth, the temple of the Tooth Relic is an immensely significant location in Sri Lanka. Want to know more about the history behind it all?

1) History
Following the parinirvana (passing) of the Buddha, the tooth relic was then preserved in the kingdom of Kalinga. This was then smuggled to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamali and her spouse Prince Dantha upon the orders of King Guhasiva. It was handed over to the King who then enshrined it.
2) The architecture of the temple
The temple’s architecture features a brick wall that runs right along the moat as well as the Bogambara Lake, which is known as the water waves wall. There are holes built right into the wall for the purpose of lighting coconut oil lamps by those who visit. If you’re planning a visit and are considering a Sri Lanka Travel Agency, you’ll find plenty around, such as Aitken Spence Travels for instance.
3) The royal palace
Located to the north of the temple is the royal palace of Kandy. Known as the “Maligawa” in Sinhalese, the palace features three Wahalkadas and a wall eight feet in height which was used as the main entrance. Presently the royal palace is preserved as an archaeological museum that can be viewed by visitors.
4) The audience hall
Known as a “Magul Maduwa”, the audience hall is where Kandyan Kings used to hold their court. This was completed during the reign of King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha.
