Sri Lanka is known as a multi-cultural country. A beautiful blend of these cultures can be witnessed in the Kandy Perahera which is one of the most glamourous processions in the world.
The origin
Kandy Perahera serves two main purposes. One is full filling the ritual of requesting the Gods to grant rainfall. The other is to honour the sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha housed inside Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy.
The Perahera
If you visit the Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic during your stay at Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy, you’ll notice that there are 4 other Hindu shrines located around the temple. Natha, Vishnu, Katharagama and Paththini shrines also send their processions to the main perahera.
The rituals
Although the final procession (Maha Perahera) is the most colourful and vibrant with majestic elephants, Nilames, dancers, and drummers, there are many other rituals before and after that. These rituals go on for weeks, and the city will be kept illuminated and decorated throughout.
The season
Kandy perahera is in August (sometimes in July). Every hotel in Kandy Sri Lanka gives away special offers during this season, making it easy for travellers to enjoy a cultural journey.
