The Purple people bridge first opened under the name of Newport and Cincinnati Bridge in 1872 which was the first railroad bridge to traverse the Ohio River. In May of 2003 the bridge was rehabilitated and re-opened as a pedestrian only bridge and listed on the National Register of Historic places in 2001.
During the restoration of the bridge in 2001, focus groups were given a variety of colors to determine for the bridge. An overwhelming response for the color purple returned and henceforth the bridge was referred to as the ‘purple bridge’ by the locals.
