Interestingly though, from time to time it has also served as the residence of the President, until in 2009 it was declared the official residence of the President by former President Mohamed Nasheed. Although access into this splendid architectural structure in prohibited to the public, one can still visit this landmark and witness the beauty of its exterior, and even take some memorable photographs. The Palace has also played host to several iconic world leaders such India’s Rajiv Gandhi, and even the Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The premises of this structure is also home to the Medhu Ziyaarai, believed to the final resting place of Abul Barakat Yousef Al-Berberi who is said to have introduced Islam to the Maldives in 1153.
