Kandy was the last kingdom of Sri Lanka. Once a prosperous kingdom, there was also a well designed royal residence in the heart of the city. The Royal palace was home to the last king of Sri Lanka, Sri Vickrama Rajasinghe. Once the palace complex comprised of various chambers such as the King’s Palace (Raja Wasala), Queen’s Palace (Meda Wasala), King’s ,Queen’s Bathing Pavilion (Ulpange), Royal Audience Hall (Magul Maduwa) and Harem Quarters (Palle Vahale) as well as the temple of the tooth relic which housed the sacred tooth relic which was to be in the possession of the ruler of the land. However today little of the structure remains. The palace which belongs to the 14th century had been burnt down in numerous occasions in the past before the capture of its last king. The prominent part that remains today is the temple of the tooth relic. Which is what bears evidence to the great architecture of that was prevalent during the Kandyan era. The temple is one of the most venerated Buddhist temples on the island and thousands arrive in the city to witness one of the most colourful pageants in the island.
Having such great importance the remains of the palace complex and the temple of the tooth relic are definitely worth a visit while in Kandy. Most hotels offer excursions to these famous landmarks, one such hotel that is located in the close proximity is the Senani Hotel.
Apart from the royal palace, there are other important places to visit in Kandy and it’s vicinity such as the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Trinity Chapel as well as Hanthana Mountain Range.
