Tucked away along Sri Lanka’s famed south coast, the charming town of Beruwala offers the perfect escape where endless, laidback days in the sun, sand, and surf beckon!
Getting There
This destination is only around 60 km from the commercial capital, Colombo, where you will find the Bandaranaike International Airport. A scenic, fast, and relatively cheap way to reach Beruwala is to catch a train from the main Colombo Fort Railway Station (it’s around a 75 to 90-minute journey). Alternatively, you can take a public or private bus along what is called Galle Road or hire a car (with or without a driver).
Accommodation
Accommodation is not hard to find though book ahead especially when it comes to staying beside the beach including at an authentic Ayurveda hotel; Sri Lanka offers such ideal options at properties like Heritance Ayurveda where you can look forward to a rejuvenating wellness retreat with time-honoured Ayurvedic rituals that offer holistic healing. Apart from plenty of contemporary comforts and beachside bliss, you can enjoy distinctive dining, yoga and meditation classes and rewarding adventures too.
Things to Do
There are plenty of engaging things to do in Beruwala such as visiting attractions like the Brief Garden; this scenic garden hideaway features diverse landscapes created by Bevis Bawa, brother of world-renowned architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Early risers can head to the Beruwala Fish Harbour to watch fishermen bring in their catch, while the historical Kechimalai Mosque and Barberyn Lighthouse are worth visits too. You can also enjoy excursions to explore the Dutch Fort in Galle and go whale watching in Mirissa.
When to Visit
The optimal time to visit Beruwala and the south and west coasts for that matter is from December to April which is perfect for those looking to escape the winter this holiday season! During this period, the weather is generally pleasant with lots of sunshine and less chance of rain. That said, you can still enjoy getaways here in the off-season, and though the monsoons may bring rain, it won’t usually last the whole day through; rates and crowds will be less during this time as well.
