Sri Lanka, earlier known as Ceylon, is famous worldwide for her beautiful misty mountains with endless tea plantations. However, the island is also blessed with an enchanting coastal belt with endless treasures and quiet beach towns to discover. Negombo is one such place. Because it’s located close to the Katunayake Airport, you can easily make this city your first stop. Here are some things to do when you’re here.
Visit a fishing village
Negombo can be described as the heart and soul of the fishing community of Sri Lanka. If you take a stroll along the beach or decide to head into the busy town, you can see people buying fish fresh off the net! As there are many luxurious Negombo beach hotels such as Heritance Negombo that are located right on the beach, you can ask your hotel to organize a tour around these fishing villages.
Go for a boat ride along the canal
Negombo was a Dutch colony, and you can still see the remnants of that history in the town’s architecture. Take a walk along the Dutch Canal, which runs through the heart of the town, and admire the beautiful houses and buildings that line the banks. You’ll also see the traditional fishing boats, known as “oruvas,” that are unique to Negombo.
Visit the St. Mary’s Church

This beautiful church is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka and is an important landmark in Negombo. The church, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful stained glass windows.
Relax on the Beach
Negombo is known for its beautiful beaches, and you can’t leave without taking a dip in the clear waters. The most popular beaches in Negombo are Negombo Beach and Marawila Beach. Take a sunbathe, enjoy the waves, or try some water sports like jet skiing and windsurfing.
