What was once a quiet, largely undiscovered stretch of villages on the West Coast of Thailand is now fast becoming a popular spot for adventurous tourists. The 6 beaches that make up the village are often the main attraction for those looking to enjoy a relaxing vacation. However, there are plenty of hidden gems both natural and cultural that are worth exploring in Khao Lak.
Dive Below the Waters
With other dive sites in Thailand becoming over-popular, the waters around Khao Lak are now beginning to draw attention as prime spots for secluded diving. The crystal clear waters near Similan Island hide vibrantly coloured reefs and diversified marine life that includes reef fish, moray eels, octopus, cuttlefish, lionfish, reef sharks and more. Other popular dive sites include Boonsang Wreck, Richelieu Rock, Premchai Wreck, Koh Bon and Koh Tachai.
Visit the Similan Islands
Apart from its stunning coral reefs and marine life, the Similan Islands are themselves worthy of exploration. Comprised of 11 islands that each have their name and number, Similan Island has plenty of thick forests with several tree types like jackfruit, bamboo and gum. Visitors will also spot various species of birds including kingfishers, sea eagles, Nicobar pigeons and more. Day excursions and trips to the islands can be arranged by various travel groups or any of the resorts like Avani+ Khao Lak Resort.
Visit the International Tsunami Museum
The International Tsunami Museum tells the devastating story of the 2004 Tsunami and its impact across several generations. Located on Phetkasem Road in a two-story home, the museum showcases several videos and photos that document the effects of the tsunami on Khao Lak. It also documents the psychological and cultural responses to the disaster and even contains information on how tsunamis are formed.
Raft Along the River
Bamboo rafting is the perfect way to explore the serene jungles in Khao Lak. The Wang Kiang Ku River is a popular spot for rafting with its lush creek and abundance of reptiles. While visitors can choose between traditional bamboo rafts and modern rafts, the bamboo rafts provide a smooth journey through the waters and an intimate engagement with the natural surroundings.
Relax at Nang Thong Beach
Located close to the village of La On in Khao Lake, this beach is lined with diving centres, restaurants and bars. It is one of the more secluded spots and is close to several Khao Lak resorts, making it perfect for families looking for some quiet time to relax, sunbathe or swim. The beach is also known to feature massage tents usually found during high season that offer relaxing massages and treatments for the weary traveller.
Explore Takua Pa Old Town
Spanning across five main roads, Takua Pa Old Town was once a significant trading hub in southern Thailand but is now a prominent cultural attraction. As evening arrives the streets come alive with street vendors and stall owners selling food and other cultural items. Tourists can also visit the local temples for a feel of the town’s culture and tradition, enjoy local coffee and little cafes and visit the local market for fresh ingredients and produce.
