In a land of which the name itself is synonymous with tea, the Hanthana tea museum fulfils its role of recording the history of this golden beverage that has placed the country within the map of the world. Accommodation is not much of a problem when visiting this quaint old museum designed to please the tea lovers of all sorts. 4km south of Kandy along the Hanthana road is the location of this museum turned 1925 vintage tea factory. Equipped with four floors, the museum showcases very old machinery used for tea production whereas it is also equipped with a sales outlet for some of Sri Lanka’s finest teas as well as a library and an auditorium. A panoramic view of the entire Kandy town lined with the Knuckles mountain range, Hunnasgiriya and the Matale range of hills can be spotted through a telescope mounted at the fourth floor also housing a restaurant. This museum pays tribute to the 130-years history of the tea plant gifted to the country by the colonials and is a joint project of the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Planters’ Association of Sri Lanka.
