Occupying pride of place in the heart of Nuwara Eliya town, Lake Gregory and the park that encircles it is a recreational hotspot like no other. Here’s what travellers can expect at the venue.
History
While it may be difficult to imagine, Gregory Lake was once a wetland area that was created primarily for the production of electricity in Nuwara Eliya. This was during the period when British Governor Sir William Gregory was ruling over this region. It is after him that the lake and the parklands in its vicinity are named. Built in 1873, Lake Gregory is a manmade lake that’s now used for leisure purposes.
Getting There
Those based at Scottish Planter or any other in the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya town can hop on a taxi or a three-wheeler to reach Lake Gregory as it is the most convenient way to visit the venue. Those who are adept at using local bus services can head into town and catch a bus bound for the popular park that occupies the centre of Nuwara Eliya.
What to See
Apart from the birds that are found on the periphery of the lake, this is also a great place to watch Nuwara Eliya town residents go about their day.
What to Do
One of the best things to do during a morning or afternoon spent at Lake Gregory is paddling about the body of water on the swan-shaped boats that are available for hire. The parklands near the lake are also prime picnic grounds for local families so you could always pack a picnic basket or grab a book and sit on the lush lawns of the lakefront park.
