One wouldn’t expect to find a lush nature reserve so close to a city, but the Udawatta Kale is just that! If you’re visiting Kandy or in the area, make sure you visit this nature reserve.
Places To Stay
If you are hoping to visit the ancient city of Kandy, you will be pleasantly surprised at the wide array of choices when it comes to accommodation! Hotels in Kandy such as Earl’s Regent Kandy are located close to notable attractions, including the Udawatta Kale reserve!
Where Is It?
This forest reserve is located just north of the Dalada Maligawa and is located on the ridge of a hill. This sanctuary was formerly part of the royal compound and was considered to be one of the many gardens enjoyed by the royal family in Kandy.
Birds Galore
Apart from the spectacular views of the city and beyond, the nature trails will allow you to witness some of the best avifauna in Sri Lanka. At least 80 species of bird have been recorded to have been spotted here. You can expect to catch a glimpse of some endemic birds including the Layards Parakeet and even the rare Three-toed Kingfisher!
More Mammals!
Despite the proximity of this reserve to Kandy city centre, one can expect to spot a few mammals as well. From porcupines to barking deer to giant Indian squirrels and many species of civet cats, these paths are walked by diverse species of mammals too.
