Opened to the public on the 26th of August 1995, the Underwater World is an underwater themed marine park and aquarium. The Underwater World was established with the purpose of conserving marine life, as well as educating people and raising awareness about marine life. Today this aquarium is one of the top attractions of the island, attracting large numbers of tourists and locals alike. It also happens to be one of Southeast Asia’s largest fresh water aquariums.
Underwater World is great family destination and promises to be an exciting and educational experience. The 6 acres complex houses over 200 different species of marine life; including sharks, penguins, and giant manta rays. The complex is divided into three sectors; the Tropical Rainforest sector, the Temperate sector, and the Sub Antarctic sector. Each sector has fish specific to that habitat, and offers you the opportunity to witness these creatures in their habitats.
There are many exciting highlights at Underwater World. One of the main highlights is the 15m long underwater tunnel, which gives you the opportunity of witnessing life underwater all around you. Another major highlight is the ‘Pengin-arium’, which is home to many intriguing Rockhopper and Black-footed penguins who usually keep visitors entertained with their behavior. The large collection of fresh water fish includes the gigantic Amazonian Arapaima; the largest fresh water fish in the world which can grow up to be over 6ft in length and weigh over 100kg!
