The densely populated city of Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Second in size only to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the country, the emirate of Dubai has developed rapidly and emerged as a global hub for finance and tourism in the last few decades. Tourists visiting Dubai will look forward to visiting Palm Jumeirah which is a structure built in the ocean as well as similarly constructed World Islands. While these sights are often visited by tourists, other attractions are fast being developed as well. Among these is Dubai Land owned by Tatweer of Dubai Holding that is to be a large scale entertainment complex. Officially announced in 2003, Dubailand is yet to witness completion as construction was halted during the financial crisis in 2008.
In 2008, a new attraction broke ground in Dubailand i.e. Universal Studios. However, the Dubailand edition of the Universal Studios suffered a similar fate as construction was halted and discontinued in 2009. Scheduled to be completed in 2010, Universal Studios Dubailand was designed to have a number of themed areas. Amongst these was ‘New York’ which featured outdoor and indoor shows as well as ‘Surf City’. Other areas were to house Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, a King Kong roller coaster as well as a Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster and a special water play area called King Tot’s Oasis.
Universal Studios Dubailand was intended to comprise of twelve rides with four roller coasters and two water rides. Though construction was halted, renewed interest in the entertainment complex has prompted parties to renegotiate the project and it is hoped that they would be successful.
