This is one of the world’s largest batik museums, with a tremendous collection of royal textiles and antiques from the Indonesian island of Java and China. This is a magnificent whitewashed building adorned with colonial design.
Location
House of Danar Hadi is located in central Java, about a 15-minute drive from Solo. Thus this is a major attraction within the easy reach of any Solo hotel including the ones aiming luxurious stays such as Alila Solo.
What to find
The museum showcases a collection of over ten thousand textiles brought from all parts of Indonesia and the rest of Asia. Upon entering the premises, you will be given a guided tour of about one and half hours with details of the significance of each item.
Watch craftsmen at work
As a part of the tour around the museum, visitors are given the opportunity to visit a workshop where craftsmen will be using their classic skills and techniques to make skirts, sarongs and scarves. You may also come across costumes worn in the olden days with significantly different designs.
