The island nation of Sri Lanka achieved independence in 1948 subsequent to three hundred years of colonial subjugation. Commencing with the Portuguese Occupation from 1505 onwards, the island was subsequently colonised by the Dutch as well as the British. Given this colonial heritage, the island underwent a massive transformation, not only in terms of administration, but also in terms of culture, economy and the law. As a result, 21st century Sri Lanka is a blend of its colonial past, native heritage and modernity.
A highlight that echoes this colonial heritage is the Galle Fort located on the Southern coast of the country. An ideal place to stay for tourists who desire a vacation by the beach, Galle is an ideal town to locate themselves in for there are a number of hotels in Galle that cater to the discerning tastes of travellers. For those who prefer a more homely touch, a number of luxurious boutique hotels and villas can be found within the Galle Fort itself, thereby providing you with the opportunity to explore this attraction as a resident rather than a visitor. However, if you wish to stay a hotel, one can recommend Jetwing Lighthouse, only minutes away from the fortress, which has an amazing view of the ocean. Therefore, the only downside of staying within the Fort itself is the absence of an ocean view outside your window but the quaint cobblestoned paths of the Fortress and the idyllic boutique shops on either side of the road compensate for the lack of view. Besides, a clear view of the ocean lies atop the walls of the Fort.
Galle Fort is ideal for a relaxing stroll and is peppered with small but lovely restaurants and cafes which are perfect for a meal or a cup of coffee. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also home to a number of boutique shops selling a myriad of wares which would make for ideal souvenirs or gifts. For those who wish to immerse themselves in the history of the island, the Maritime Museum would make for a wonderful evening outing.
