Muhammad Thakurufaanu is one of the greatest Maldivian heroes, and is still a subject of inspiration to millions of people in his native country. Let’s take a look at his life and historical place of residence.
The Rise of a Legend
The days of Portuguese colonisation were extremely dark for Maldivians, who were oppressed and slaughtered by the invaders. Muhammad Thakurufaanu and his brothers travelled to Maliku, just off of India, and returned with a ship which they used to defeat the colonists in an 8-year-long war.
Utheemu Island
This is one of many islands in the Haa Aliff Atoll, and is the birthplace of Muhammad Thakurufaanu. It is therefore considered a very important historical location. It’s definitely a place worth checking out if you’re staying at a Maldives beach resort, especially one located to Malé, such as Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon.

Utheemu Ganduvaru
After his victory over the Portuguese, the Maldivians made him their Sultan, and rejected the authority of the former kings that had converted to Christianity. This small palace that was built on his home island then became his historic abode.

Inside the Palace Complex
Visitors can take a guided tour of Utheemu Ganduvaru to discover beautiful interiors more than five-centuries old, along with artefacts such as swing beds, elaborate wooden carvings, and various lamps that utilise coco palm oil.
