The Harbour Story
The Trincomalee (Trinco) Harbour is a massive seaport located in the Trincomalee Bay also known as Koddiyar Bay. It is strategically located in the heart of the Indian Ocean and its position has shaped its history with numerous sea wars to determine the ownership of the harbour. The Dutch, Portuguese, French and the British all have controlled the harbour in different eras.
History
The Trincomalee Harbour was once the British Naval Base until the Sri Lanka Government took ownership to develop it as a commercial harbour. The port is known for is the massive size and it is the single harbour in the Indian Ocean that can be accessed by all types of ships during diverse weather conditions
Operations
The Trincomalee port is open 24 hours throughout the year except on May Day. The public can access the Naval Museum and take a boat tour (depending on the weather). Visitors need to acquire a pass to enter the premises. Visitors can stay at some of the best hotels in Sri Lanka close to the port such as Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes to access the location with ease. For those visiting Trinco, the tour is highly recommended since it is suitable for all age groups.
Geography
The Trincomalee Harbour is segmented into two sections Inner Harbour and the Outer Harbour. The outer harbour includes the Trinco Bay, which approaches the harbour, and the Koddiyar bay into where the Mahaweli River drains
