Bangkok is a greatly urbanized city that still holds onto its sacred shrines and temples with pride, and the Wat Arun is no different.
History
Established in the year 1768, Wat Arun is also known as the Temple of Dawn. This Buddhist temple was built in the Rattanakosin era and was the king of the skyline back then. After Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese, King Taksin named the location of the temple as the capital, making it a prime religious site.
Architecture
Being a first class Royal Temple, the Wat Arun is unmatched in beauty even at a luxury resort in Bangkok. The rising stupa, surrounding pillars, and overall grandeur are what make this temple stand apart from others. The tower is designed after the Khmer style and is endowed with over millions of pieces of Chinese porcelain.
Going in
Once you walk up the steep staircase, you will find yourself on the terrace, which opens up to allow the view of the river and the places around it.
Location
Residing on the bank of Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is easily accessed from most parts of the town; even tourist hotels like Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort are within travelling distance.
