Located in the Pathum Wan district of Bangkok, Wat Pathum Wanaram is an ancient Buddhist temple. King Rama IV was the founder of this temple back in 1857, intending for it to be a place of worship near his residence, the Sa Pathum Palace. During initial construction, the entire area consisted only of rice fields, making entry to the temple only possible via Khlong Saen Saeb, a canal running through Central Thailand. Ashes of the Thai royal family from the line of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej have been interred at this temple.
Amongst the many exciting things to do in Bangkok, this temple will be a valuable addition to your agenda on your trip. Being a tourist hotspot, there are hotels situated all around the city ranging from absolute minimal budget accommodation to luxurious hospitality providers, such as the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel.
Taking a closer look at the temple, visitors will be able to come across a sala Thai, an open pavilion created to protect people from rain and sun, remodelled from the crematorium of the late Princess Mother of Thailand. Ancient craftsmanship is a delight to the eyes at this building, covered in lacquered sculptures and ornate detailing. Through this artistry, one can see a beautiful depiction of the dwelling place of the Thai gods, Mount Meru.
Trees surround the temple giving it a peaceful aura despite it being right in the middle of the bustling city of Bangkok. There is a small park area perfect for those who want to start or end their day with a stress-relieving stroll or some meditation amidst the greenery. Behind the outer high wall of the temple lies a large pond, beyond which there’s a second wall, concealing the actual temple. Past these walls of secrecy lie large prayer halls and a separate area of residence for the monks of the temple.
One of the most convenient ways to reach Wat Pathum Wanaram is to hitch a ride on the Skytrain to either Siam Square or Chitlom as the temple is situated in between these two stations.
