Wat Pho is one of the most prominent Wats in all of Thailand. Originally a school of indigenous medicine it was merged to become a monastery for Buddhist monks. It is considered the first public institute in Thailand whose teachings were open to the public and is said to be where the original Thai massage techniques were first established. Towards the north of the compounds lies the 50 foot tall golden reclining Buddha. Next to it is situated the ancient medicinal school. Also within the grounds of Wat Pho is a scion of the original tree the Lord Buddha is said to have gained enlightenment under. This scion is now a flourishing Bo Tree with a history in its own rite.
