Wat Phra Yai is located between Jomtien Beach and Pattaya on the top of a hill in all its glory at 18 metres tall. It was constructed in the 1940s and has become a very popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.
Popular with Tour Groups
The temple is a popular stop for tours, especially those interested in the intricate architecture and sculpture of the golden statues and the complex around the temple. The pavilion offers a partial view of Jomtien beach and isn’t that far from many of the Pattaya resorts.
The Architecture
There is an elaborate staircase that leads up to the temple with golden dragons on the railing and different Buddha statues in various postures depicting his life on the pavilion at the top.
Once at the Top
Once you have scaled the staircase to the top, you will find yourself in awe at the sheer size of the Buddha statue. It has been created in a distinct Thai style. If you are staying nearby like at Avani Pattaya Resort, you can make a day trip of it and also explore other attractions nearby like a Chinese Shrine complex and a Taoist temple which will help you load up on the cultural.
There is plenty to see and photograph at the Wat Phra Yai even if you aren’t Buddhist but are interested in learning about the philosophy and its impact on Thai culture.
