Despite it being a dynamic city that is a thriving hub for business, leisure and retail, Shanghai also has a rich cultural heritage that is very much a part of its identity. The city and its surroundings have sites rich in history and one among the highlights are the quaint water towns around Shanghai. Named due to the fact that they have been built around waterways, these ancient towns are well worth a visit. Look to base yourself in the city and find centrally located accommodation. Shanghai makes a great starting point for such tours and Ascott Heng Shan Shanghai is a convenient place to stay at in this regard.
The easiest and closest of such sites to access from Shanghai is Qibao Ancient Town which is only around 30 minutes from the city. Travellers to this charming locale will find two canals and pedestrian streets providing charming backdrops where one will find shops and stalls selling everything from local snacks to fascinating souvenirs. Also worth visiting is the Zhou Family Miniature Engravings where one can see a variety of intricate engravings.
One of the most well known water towns, Zhouzhuang is further away from Shanghai though the one and a half hour journey will offer a rewarding experience for those who explore its roads and waterways. A great way to explore the town would be to take a ferry boat ride along the waterways which lets you see traditional architecture and buildings. The town features structures that date back to both the Ming and Qing dynasties and offers opportunities for you to purchase traditional art and crafts as well. While it does get crowded, a visit to Zhouzhuang Water Town is an experience worth having.
