Koh Samui, part of the Mu Koh Samui Archipelago, measures around 25 km at its widest point. The central part of the island is a tropical jungle covered mountain where the waterfalls of Samui originate. While some waterfalls are easily accessible, some involve treks through hilly and jungle covered terrain of central Samui. Visiting the waterfalls of Koh Samui is another way of enjoying the spectacular natural scenery of the island.
Namuang is the best known waterfall in Koh Samui. Located near Ban Thurian, about 12 km inland from Nathon Bay, it is really two different waterfalls found in close proximity to each other and therefore named Namuang I and II. Namuang I is easily accessed as it is by the side of the main road. It is the smaller of the two at 18 metres. The water cascades into a pool at the bottom that is popular with many travellers who stop here to take a refreshing dip. Namuang II is taller and steeper at 80 metres and a 30 minute hike down the hill from the main road is needed in getting to this site. The fairly tiring trip is worth it when the waterfall is at its best after the rain. The Namuang safari park is located between the two waterfalls and offers elephant safaris among other entertainment.
Hin Lad Waterfall is about 3 km from Nathon. A hike of about 2 km on a fairly challenging route through a forest is needed to reach it. Many people do this just to take a dip in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall particularly during the hotter months and to enjoy the trek through a cool forest.
Samui Hin is another waterfall in a more secluded area that is favoured by picnickers. Khowyai Waterfall is on the way to the Suk Valan Viewpoint. Though not spectacular it is still pretty enough. For those who want to explore more, the stone steps by the falls lead to a viewing point at the top of the hill. Tar Tan is a really small waterfall which involves a jungle trek on dirt roads to get to it. The water from this fall flows down the hill transforming to Namuang I.
The best time to visit these falls is immediately after or during the rainy season from about September to May. At other times due to the lack of water they are less spectacular.
