Sri Lanka’s strategic location and biologically diverse waters mean you can see whales and other marine life across two whole seasons; November to April in Mirissa, May to October in Trincomalee.

What Whales?
Blue whales, the world’s largest mammals are beautiful and majestic and will take your breath away. You can see blue whales in both Mirissa and Trincomalee.
You can also see sperm whales in Sri Lankan waters. They are the most common whales, but you would have to go out to see a bit further if you want to see them. They’re situated more in the south, so you can stay at a Galle hotel for convenience like Le Grand Galle for example.
In addition to that humpback whales and many pods of dolphins will be a sure sight!
Whale Times & Seasons
Whale season depends on whether the monsoons are imminent or not. The Navy coast guard ensures the weather conditions and tour operators must comply as safety is paramount.
You will have to be ready for an early start to the day as the boats leave around 6.00 a.m. to make it in time to the morning whale feeding sessions.
Precautions and Safety
As mentioned earlier, the coast guard and tour operators ensure the safety of passengers as well as the whale-watching itself is being humane. If there is too much noise and disturbance of the whales the coast guard will be notified and will stop the offenders.
If you get seasick its good if you take your own supply of pills for it. The tour operators will offer everything else.
