Chiang Rai isn’t considered as popular as Phuket, Bangkok and Pattaya for tourists to visit and due to this reason, this undiscovered gem is bypassed by travellers as nothing but a stopover on the way to Laos or Myanmar. But there’s so much to experience in Chiang Mai and here are four of our favourites.
The City of Chiang Rai
The city is quiet and unassuming but over-the-top and opulent at the same time. One of the amazing pieces of art is the clock tower which was opened in 2008 and is a gilded monstrosity that puts on a light show in the evenings.
Singha Park Tea Plantation
A bit of a drive from your Chiang Rai hotel, Singha Park Tea plantation is a beautifully landscaped estate that is located on a farm where the entrance is free, but if you get a scooter you can ride around for a couple of hours and have a cup of tea to top it off.
Elephant Valley
You can talk to your hotel the likes of Hotel Sooknirund to get a tour of Elephant Valley, where unlike the exploiting elephant parks you get to see them in a special sanctuary.
Architectural Wonder Temples
Chiang Rai’s temples are like something out of a science fiction novel. You should visit the famed White Temple and the Blue Temple when you are there.
