If you’re holidaying in Sri Lanka’s beloved ‘Down South’ you’re in for quite a treat as there is much to see and enjoy here, apart from the gorgeous beaches. One such attraction is the curious Hummanaya Blow Hole, which, what can we say, is quite a mind-BLOWING sight! (excuse the pun).
Where is it?
The Hummanaya Blow Hole is located about 4 hours away from Colombo and about 1 hour away from the world-famous whale watching destination of Mirissa. Beach hotels the likes of Esprit d’ici Hotel arrange tours to this wonderful natural spectacle. However, if you prefer to go see it your own way here’s how to do it. Pass the Matara town and thereafter Dickwella, turn right at Kudawella and continue about 1.1 km. From there, you’ll need to go on a 20-minute trek up the recently-built shallow steps to get to the spot.
Why “Hummanaya”?
The name “Hummanaya” is derived from the “hoo” noise that can be heard quite a distance away when the blowhole is active- හූ (Hoo) + මානය (Manaya) = Hummanaya!
World’s Second Largest!
Hummanaya is Sri Lanka’s only blowhole and that’s not the end of its importance. It’s also the second largest blowhole in the world.
How Does it Work?
This is a natural blowhole and it occurs when sea water blasts through an underwater cavern and is pushed up. The water flows underneath the shore, and then bursts out of this hole due to extreme pressure. The spectacular water cascade created by this geological feature sprouts up every couple of minutes, varying on the condition of the sea. The spray is recorded to often reach as high as 82 feet 98 feet.
