Located right next to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the Kandy National Museum is part of the former Royal Palace of Kandy. Comprised of two main exhibition areas, the primary exhibits are showcased in the Palle Vahala building which was once upon a time, provided shelter to the king’s harem. The secondary exhibits are put on display in the main palace building. Reminiscent of the pre-European Sinhalese life, the many artefacts that are housed here are is a fascinating mix of royal relics such as sceptres, thrones, customary swords, weapons, jewellery, coins, bric-a-brac and tools. Other artefacts that can be seen here are ancient ola leaves, moonstones, pots of various sizes that belonged to the Kandyan era. The structure of the museum itself is original and therefore portrays the true grandeur of a bygone era.
