Located on the west side of Hokkaido, Otaru Aquarium is known to receive around 350,000 visitors each year. It is built in a beautiful location and faces the Sea of Japan, offering a rare blend of marine life and outdoor experiences.

Inside the Otaru Aquarium
Lining the dark corridors are glass tanks, including a variety of rare aquatic life. After a day at the aquarium, explore Otaru’s picturesque canal area or relax at one of the hotels in Hokkaido Japan. The likes of Grand Park Otaru offer easy access to the aquarium and other local attractions.
Dolphin Stadium
The Otaria and dolphin shows are a daily occurrence in this aquarium. Since dolphin ‘Mary’ gave birth to an adorable calf, the Dolphin Stadium has been abuzz once again with visitors to catch a glimpse of this sweet little creature.
Gentoo Penguins
With a yellow bill and a white band over their heads, Gentoo penguins are a common sight in this aquarium. It’s known for its gentle demeanour and curious nature. It’s a common sight to see these penguins walking on the snow (or grass before winter) three times a day.
Other Facilities
The ‘Aquarium Shop’ has cute stuffed dolls along with ‘Lumpfish character Makoto-kun’ while the restaurant here offers interesting meals. How about a Kamenotaro-kun lunch? Arranged to look like a turtle, this meal consists of an omelette along with weiners and Hamburg-style steak. There are two private nursing rooms along with other related facilities.
