Amongst the most popular attractions in Oman, Nizwa Souq beckons travellers seeking an authentic local experience as well as a chance to find some unique souvenirs. This bustling marketplace is a treasure trove waiting to be explored and are insights to help plan your visit.

Location
Just outside Nizwa town, nestled on the western bank of the river, lies the Nizwa Souq in the Ad Dakhiliyah region. Its proximity to the majestic Nizwa Fort makes it an ideal stop for a culturally immersive day trip. While Nizwa is roughly 160 km from Muscat, consider basing yourself at a luxury resort at destinations like the Green Mountain. Such properties including Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort will help organise convenient excursions to the Souq, allowing you to fully appreciate its wonders.
Planning Your Visit
Before heading to this site from your resort in Oman, keep in mind that the Souq operates two daily sessions; the first is from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm and following a midday break, the market springs back to life from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Fridays have an earlier start at 6:00 am; this day is when you can witness the goat market as well. Look to combine your visit with some exploration of the adjoining Nizwa Fort. Allocate a good 4 to 5 hours to fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and colours of both these attractions.
What to Expect
Step back in time as you enter Nizwa Souq, one of the nation’s oldest marketplaces. It comprises a main building and additional structures housing diverse markets, including a vibrant date market and stalls brimming with fresh produce. Of course, the true heart of the Souq lies in its diverse offerings (more on those coming up). A definite highlight is the lively Friday goat market, where men and women adorned in traditional Bedouin and Omani attire engage in the age-old practice of buying and selling livestock. Witnessing this cultural exchange is an unforgettable experience.
Key Things to Buy
Nizwa Souq is a shopper’s paradise. Seek out the iconic “khanjar,” a curved dagger traditionally worn by Omanis during formal occasions. Beyond this item, a plethora of other treasures await. Handmade pottery, the fragrant resin of frankincense, intricately designed mosaic lamps, and gleaming silver jewellery are just a glimpse of the exquisite items on offer. Don’t forget to pick up some locally woven baskets, fresh dates bursting with flavour, and a variety of aromatic spices. Remember, a friendly bargain with the shopkeepers is part of the Souq experience, adding to the local charm!
