If you’re in Oman and are looking to explore the city’s historical journey, visiting the several majestic forts around the city will certainly take you back in time. Here are some of the most prominent forts that will give you a glimpse into the eventful past of Oman.
Nizwa Fort
Dating back to the 9th century, the Nizwa fort is an excellent showpiece of historic Omani architecture. It is the only fort in the region to feature a cylindrical tower and contains the fort’s original defence systems, multiple prisons and massive open grounds.
Bahla Fort
Deemed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is one of the oldest forts in Oman. Its walls and towers are built in adobe on a sandstone base, and the fort was continuously updated over the centuries by several rulers of the region. Its perimeter fortification is a great example of the defensive architectural styles of the late medieval period.
Jabreen Fort
Despite being initially built in 1675, this is one of the best-preserved forts in Oman. It has served as an important learning centre and features three stories, two towers and several rooms and halls. Its interiors feature decorated windows wooden balconies and arches that are inscribed with Arabic calligraphy.
Muttrah Fort
Positioned atop a mountain, the Muttrah Fort has long kept watch over the city for centuries. The Fort’s origins are linked with the first Portuguese Empire and it dates back to the 16th century. It stood as an important defence against any approach from the mountains or along the route to Old Muscat. Those staying at the Al Falaj Hotel will find this to be one of the closest forts to visit.
Al Jalali Fort
Also dating back to the 16th century, the Al Jalali Fort was formerly a defence fortress and was constructed by the Portuguese. Today it is one of the highlights of the Omani cityscape and provides an excellent view of the sunset which is one of the best things to see in Muscat.
