The site is open daily from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and if you want to encounter fewer people at the site, plan a weekday visit. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat. While there’s a café here, consider bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy amidst the serene surroundings and remember to dispose of any litter responsibly.
A Botanical Wonderland
Established in 1821 during British colonial rule, the Royal Botanic Gardens cover an expansive area of over 60 hectares offering something new to discover on your adventures in Kandy. Things to do here include wandering around the different sections where you will see a fascinating array of indigenous and exotic plants. You can marvel at the towering Java Willow on the Great Lawn, admire the colourful blooms of the Pride of Burma, and discover the unique Double Coconut Palms from Seychelles.
Orchid House, Flower Garden, and Fernery
One of the highlights of the gardens is the Orchid House, where you can witness an inspiring display of exotic floral species, such as Grammatophyllum speciosum, the world’s largest orchid! Explore the nearby Flower Garden, featuring colourful beds of perennials and annuals including coleus varieties. Immerse yourself in the lush greenery of the Fernery, home to over 100 species of ferns set amidst a picturesque, landscaped area complete with intersecting paths.

You will also come across several ‘Palm Avenues’ with towering palms, some reaching over 21 metres in height that make for some great photographs. Visit the Spice Garden for an aromatic journey amidst spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper. Observe various cacti at the Cactus House and marvel at the variety of greenhouse plants at the Plant House. Don’t miss the opportunity to also admire towering bamboo, including the giant bamboo of Burma, some reaching 30 to 40 metres in height!
