Pahiyangala cave is also known as the Fa Hsien cave, due to a legend that says the Chinese Buddhist monk Fa-Hsien, took shelter here during his long journey to Adam’s Peak.
Location
Pahiyangala caves lies in a very secluded village named Yatagampitiya and are known to be one of Asia’s largest rocks that have been formed naturally. History
Research shows that 37,000 years ago, ancient cavemen used to occupy these caves. The massive space vacant within the caves makes it possible for a crowd of more than 2800 to gather at the same time. Caves were initially maintained by a Chinese monk. Several years later the management was taken over by Ven. Porogam thera, a Sri Lankan Buddhist priest.
Height
The cave surpasses 195 ft in length and 170ft in height. It is more than 370ft above sea level. The tunnels that can be found inside are naturally formed. Entrances to these tunnels are obstructed at present.
Discoveries
During the excavations, five skulls and a complete human skeleton was discovered. Apart from the human remains, several objects from the period were also discovered. These included stone weapons, grinding stones, scraps of dried food, seashells, bones of wild animals etc.
