The magnificent fortress in the sky has a number of varying stories about Prince Kashapa and how he built his kingdom in the land known as Sigiriya.

The story begins
Kashyapa was the eldest son of King Dhatusena. However, despite being the eldest, he was the son of one of the king’s concubine. King Dhatusena’s other son, Mogallana was of royal birth and was, therefore, the rightful heir. This angered Prince Kashyapa as he had all the qualities and skills of being the crown prince.
The plan
Jealous of his younger brother, Prince Mogallana, King Kasyapa sought the help of an angered army commander who wished to overthrow the king. A plan was set in motion to overthrow the king in the form of a palace coup, and the throne was usurped in 473 AD.
Sigiriya Rock
Kashyapa was said to have killed his father and enclosed his body within the walls of the nearby reservoir walls. Angering the people and fearful of his life, he fled to the jungle and sought refuge at the summit of the Sigiriya Rock. Over the years, he built his kingdom here and his citadel at the peak.
