At Galeria Perdana there is a curious collection of items that were all presents that were offered to one of the Malaysian Prime Ministers Mahatir. The location was opened to the public in 1995 and it exhibits crystal, porcelain, silver, textiles and copper items along with Islamic art and paintings. The area is spread across 5000 square meters of land and includes beautifully landscaped lawns and a stunning two-storey residence that resembles the oriental style of Malaysia. Galeria Perdana is a museum that has over 2500 exhibits and each area has been separated into sections. The first place you will encounter is the Carving Room that has a gallery presenting valuable Malay wooden designs. Next in line is the Reading Room which has a collection of reference articles and F1 racing cars. The final space is the outdoor Greenhouse where some special plants are nurtured.
Mahatir’s collection is a variety of items that he has kept over the years. Most of it has been presented as gifts by world leaders, distinguished foreign visitors, statesman and other significant figures. All that is on display is accompanied with a detailed description about what the gift is and a background story. Mahatir was eager to get Malaysians to look at the gifts and awards that were presented to him. He was of the opinion that all of the items he received during his tenure were actually gifts that were for the people of Malaysia. He felt that the people of his country need to access the collection of valuable that were given to him as their leader.
Take your time to wander around the museum because you will find out a lot about other world leaders and the significant personalities that have visited the country. The outdoor area is the best place for a stroll; most of the plants in the greenhouse are actually authentic plants and herbs that are found in Malaysia. The museum is open from 8.30 am to 5.30pm and admission fees are quite affordable, it is 10RM for adults and 4RM for children. Beach Resorts Langkawi would be a good fit for those who want to visit the Galeria Perdana. 5 star hotel in Langkawi provide easy access to the museum and several other tourist attractions.
