Kande Viharaya is a Buddhist temple, located in the town of Aluthgama, in the Kalutara District of Sri Lanka. Often visited by numerous pilgrims of the country to offer their prayers, the temple is believed to have been founded in the year 1734 by Ven. Karapagala Dewamitta Thero, and is considered to be a major archaeological site in Sri Lanka.
Location
Located only a 9-minute ride away from Cinnamon Bay Beruwala, Kande Viharaya is easily reachable from almost any lodging in the region. A visit to this Buddhist temple is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Beruwala, for both locals and foreigners. As the temple is situated on top of a hill, a short climb is required to reach the top.
The Complex
The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere, with many visitors arriving to pay their respects and seek spiritual guidance. The main temple complex is home to several buildings, including the main stupa, relic chamber, image house, Bo tree and devalas (smaller temples dedicated to particular Gods).
The History

The Bo tree, which stands mighty and tall to this date is believed to be 300 years old, portraying the historical significance of Kande Viharaya. Although the large stupa of the temple was erected in 1935, a smaller-sized stupa was built back in the year 1783 by Ven. Udugama Chandrasara Thero.

In recent years, the temple has become a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to the temple to learn about Buddhism and the history of this ancient religion. The temple offers guided tours for visitors who wish to add a spiritual touch to their island vacation.
