Located in Little India off Jalan Besar the Masjid Abdul is a well-known historic Mosque in Singapore. Although it was constructed in 1907, it needed a major restoration by the year 2003. The original building had timber partitions and a roof of tiles. The mosque faces several shops and houses which are mostly used to read Qur’an and other religious and communal activities.
The architecture of the Mosque has been admired by many. The prayer hall is surrounded by beautiful verandahs and has been oriented towards Mecca. There are panels with calligraphic inscriptions installed in several places. The hexagonal tower that forms the copula divides into three sections at the top.
Clusters of huge Corinthian columns support the building. There are a number of pilasters of Doric designs that can be found installed on the interior and the exterior. Single leaf windows are also another unique feature of the mosque along with arched openings along the veranda. In 1994, 2.5 million dollars were raised from the restoration of the mosque. The foundation of the building was strengthened and an air conditioned prayer hall was installed. After restoration work ended the mosque was opened to the public in 2003 and is able to accommodate up to 4000 worshippers.
The area of the mosque was a famous business hub back in the day, bustling with south Indian Muslim merchants. The first mosque that existed here was for the religious needs of these early settlers. Abdul Gaffoor was one of the trustees of the mosque who later initiated the renovation and restoration of the building.
