Built in 1938 under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Qassim Al Thani, the Al-Zubarah Fort is a magnificent Qatari military fortress with an immense historical significance. Covering an area of approximately 400 hectares and approximately 60 hectares inside the outer town wall, the Al-Zubarah Fort was originally built as a Coast Guard station to the thriving fishing and trading port that is Zubarah. It is also one of the largest and the best preserved 18th-19th century merchant town in the Gulf, providing an important insight into the social and economic history and urban life of those golden times.
