When it comes to enjoying the sublime sun, sand and surf in Sri Lanka, Kalutara is the place to go and here’s more to help you plan your getaway.
Accommodation
Look to stay at a hotel or resort that’s “Safe and Secure” certified and which is located by the beach and a lagoon. Options include Anantara Kalutara Resort which offers luxury suites and villas, some with private pools as well; such properties are ideal since they also come with fun clubs for kids and teens, diverse dining venues, water sports, an Ayurveda spa and more.
Key Attractions
The sun-kissed shores are amongst the main allures here while there are plenty of places to visit in Kalutara too. One of the most popular attractions is the huge Kalutara Temple and its sacred Bodhi tree. You can also visit the Edwardian-style mansion called Richmond Castle, Kalutara Basket Centre and Fa Hien Cave home to an archaeological discovery, while don’t miss taking a boat ride on the Kalu Ganga (river).
Getting There
Kalutara is around 45 km from the commercial capital, Colombo, and about 83 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Some resorts will organise a luxury chauffeur service from the airport, while domestic flights to this destination are available too. Alternatively, from Colombo, you can take a scenic train ride or catch a public or private bus.
Packing Tips
Since Sri Lanka is a tropical country, light cotton or linen clothing is ideal as well as slippers or sandals. Bring a pair of comfy shoes if planning to go exploring along with plenty of effective sunscreen, a sunhat and sunglasses. Keep in mind that when visiting religious sites, you should wear attire that covers bare legs and shoulders.
