Otaru is never short of amazing things to do. And the best thing about the city is that it is small enough that you will be able to do most of the things without having to travel for miles. Nevertheless, here’s the list.
1. Otaru Canal
One of the best things you can do in Otaru is to take a walk along the canal. It was vital to the city when its main industry was herring, and today it is an arty excursion. It’s only a short walk from any Otaru hotel near Jr station.
2. Herring Mansion
The industry of herring may have collapsed, but many wealthy fishermen were made in the process. The Herring Mansion was built in the 19th century. Today it serves as a museum showcasing the fisherman’s living conditions.
3. Aoyama Villa
A kilometre away from the Herring Mansion is a beautiful villa built by the Aoyama family of herring business fame.

Nicknamed “Wall Street of the North,” this was once Otaru’s financial centre. It is very easily accessed from local hotels like Grand Park Otaru.
5. Nikka Whiskey Distillery
Japanese whiskey has started growing in popularity. The Nikka Wine Distillery was founded by the man considered the father of Japanese whiskey.
