Negombo is the first city that you will come across when you arrive in Sri Lanka. There is so much to see in this little seaside town. It will almost be a taste of the country. Here are five of the best places to visit.
1. Fishing Village
Originally, Negombo was a fishing village and it still maintains this image as most of the locals earn a living from going out to sea. Visit the fish market to witness the pulse of the locals.
2. Canal Boat Hire
During the colonial era, many canals were built to transport cinnamon to the port. If you ask your hotel the likes of Heritance Negombo, they can arrange a canal boat tour for you.
3. Angurukaramulla Temple
While there are some great temples to visit around the island, this one is special for its detailed sculptures and murals.
4. St. Mary’s Church
Negombo is one of the few predominantly Catholic towns. While there are many churches, the largest cathedral is St. Mary’s.
5. Negombo Beach
It is the beauty of the beaches that has resulted in the town changing from a fishing village to a resort town. There are numerous Negombo beach hotels and bars that cater to a large tourist base.
