Occupying an important position in Florida’s cultural landscape is the Frost Art Museum, a part of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of Florida International University in Miami. Founded in 1977, this important cultural institution has become a prestigious addition to the university. Through its programs and services the museum endeavours to reach a broad audience, facilitate scholarly research and play an important role in the life of the community. The advantageous location of COMO Hotels & Resorts puts cultural sites such as this within easy reach of its guests.
The Frost Art Museum’s permanent collection is made up three separate collections comprising of more than 6000 objects. The General Collection includes examples of American print making from the 1960s and 70s, photographs, Pre Columbian objects dated between 200 to 500 AD and works by contemporary Caribbean and Latin American artists. In 1989 the Frost Museum inherited the 2,300 objects of the Metropolitan Museum and Art Centre Collection comprising of sculpture, photographs, paintings of major 20th century artists, American prints, rare Japanese Netsukes and Asian and African bronzes. The Betty Liard Perry Emerging Artists Collection is entirely made up of artworks from exceptional graduating students of the fine art programs of the university. The museum also has 57 monumental outdoor sculptures. This exceptional body of work finally got the home it deserved when it was moved into specially designed new quarters in 2008. Three galleries now showcase the permanent collection while six other galleries feature temporary exhibitions. Among the building’s many special attributes is the clever exploitation of natural light in the galleries and diffusion of ultra violet light by scattering light on the walls through petal like structures. The art deco styling of Metropolitan by COMO, the award winning hotel in Miami Beach contributes to the exciting cultural vibe of the city.
Annually the museum offers a series of innovative exhibitions, educational programs and public events that bring together collectors, gallery owners and artists. The public can enjoy high resolution images of the museum’s collection on line through the Google Art Project.
