Colombo definitely has its fair share of museums, big and small, but the Customs Museum is easily the most enigmatic yet fascinating one to be found in the whole country.

Open Two Hours A Week
The most peculiar thing about the museum is the fact that it’s only open for two hours every week. If you wish to visit the museum, then the only chance to do so occurs from 10 am to 12 pm on Wednesdays.
Location
You can discover this museum along Main Street in very close proximity to the Pettah area, which is famous for its open-market. If you’re staying at one of the many Colombo hotels nearby, such as Cinnamon Life, then this a good place to spend a couple of hours on a Wednesday morning.
The Exhibits
Everything displayed in the museum is an item that someone tried to smuggle into or out of the country at some point. These include leopard skins, ivory and rhinoceros horns, and artefacts as old as two centuries.
Picture Policy
Photography within the museum is, for the most part, restricted unless you obtain special permission but those are mostly reserved for journalists and not tourists. This is due to the fact that many smugglers visit the museum to discover ways to avoid detection by the customs.
