One of the key local attractions, Osaka Castle offers insights into the city’s rich history and Hideyoshi Toyotomi who unified Japan. Here’s more on this captivating site.
Getting There
When considering where to stay in Osaka, look for hotels or apartments close to this site which can be easily reached from the Kansai International Airport. Around a 10-minute taxi ride from properties like Citadines Namba Osaka, the castle is also near the Osakajokoen JR Station and the Tanimachi Yonchome Subway Station.
Historical Roots
The original castle dates to the 1500s when Hideyoshi Toyotomi constructed it on the site where Honganji Temple once stood. The Main Tower was said to be truly magnificent and was Toyotomi’s stronghold as he quelled local wars and united the country. The castle was subsequently destroyed and rebuilt several times and today’s structure dates to 1931.
The Castle Museum
Built to mirror the appearance of the original Osaka Castle, the site is an ideal place to visit; there’s an informative museum (open from 9:00am to 5:00pm) which has a huge collection with artefacts, weapons, armour, portraits, a diorama on Toyotomi Hideyoshi, illustrations of the wars at the time and more.
