The Doi Luang National Park is a park situated in Northern Thailand. Spanning an area of over one thousand square kilometres and spreading across three provinces (Lampang, Payao and Chiang Rai), the park is easily one of the largest in the country. It was established in 1990 by merging four pre-existing national parks and encompasses many diverse landscapes including highlands and lowlands. The park is situated in the Phi Pan Nam Mountain Range and shares its name with one of the mountains. Both the Lao River and the Wang River originate from here. The national park is home to an incredible amount of wildlife and indigenous plants. Visitors can see Moulmein cedar, ingyin, Siamese sal, Kabok, ironwood and Sela trees as well as animals such as tigers, monkeys, civets, and deer. Animals to watch out for include the Indochinese leopard, the sun bear and the Asian black bear. The Doi Luang National Park contains a sizeable bird population and bird lovers should keep an eye out for the red billed blue magpie and the blue winged Shiva.
The park enjoy three distinct seasons. The rainy season goes on from June to October; winter starts in November and ends in January, while summer lasts from February to May. The best times to visit are during winter and summer. Those visiting during winter should bring jackets as it gets very cold.
