An esteemed institution of learning, the Donglin Academy dates back to 1111 AD within the intriguing city of Wuxi, where Yang Shi, a prominent neo-Confucian scholar taught. Visit this inspiring site as part of an excursion here when you stay at a Wuxi hotel in the area such as the Millennium Wuxi. Its scenic surrounds and attentive staff make it an ideal hotel in Wuxi for travellers.
Also known as the Guishan Academy, Donglin derived its latter name from the famed Donglin Temple, which is situated at the base of Mount Lu, which was vetted by the famed scholar Yang Shi, who felt that it was an ideal locality to host his teaching. It remained a prominent site until it fell into disuse. In 1604, a Grand Secretary of the Ming Dynasty oversaw the restoration of the academy under the patronage of the Changzhou state governor at the time. Subsequently, the academy gave its name to what is known as the Dongling movement, a philosophical approach that took hold during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. Despite suffering destruction over the course of the academy’s history, it has now been restored to evoke the splendour of its inception, which makes it a must-see site on your cultural itinerary.
