Located amidst the scenic hillside of the Bandarawela town, the Dowa Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the most important heritage sites that the Uva Province has on offer. It is said that King Valagamba himself who had built the temple had carved the statue on to the rock face while he was in hiding but he had to leave the place before the statue was completed. Also of interest is the fact that the tunnel found behind the image house of the temple guarded by the statue of a clay King Cobra which is said to lead right into the Ravana Guhawa found in Ella, a cave where it is said that Ravana had hid Seetha after kidnapping her from Rama. The image house also carved out of rock features a large number of paintings and murals bearing Kandyan influence. Dowa Rja Maha Viharaya is a place of many mysteries and fascinating stories.
