Sri Lanka has long been a popular destination with its pristine beaches and golden sandy shorelines. Out of them, the Kirinda Beach has a spectacular view coupled with a rich history.
Overview
Fronting a fine stretch of sandy beach in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, the Kirinda Beach is a haunting place bypassed by many tourists. The rocky outcrop on the beach is the perfect spot to witness some of the incredible views of this desolate coast and the ocean beyond. Moreover, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the glistening dome of the Maharama dagoba.
Legends
This beach is famous for one of the legends in the ancient history of Sri Lanka. Once King Devanampiyatissa has angered the Gods by doing a sacrilegious act to a monk and it caused the ocean to flood the land. As a result, a ship was set afloat placing his daughter, Vihara Mada Devi in it. The place where this brave princess landed is referred to as Dovera in Kirinda.
Location
Before commencing your journeys in this part of Sri Lanka, do take note of the available accommodation options. Amongst the Kataragama hotels in the area, Mandara Rosen Kataragama will come across as an excellent venue from where visiting the Kirinda Beach would not be difficult.
