Kalutara is a popular coastal city located towards the southern part of the island of Sri Lanka. While most travellers visit this destination for its beautiful beaches, Kalutara is also home to several cultural and historic attractions. Here are a few of the highlights you shouldn’t miss out on if you plan to visit.
Kalutara Bodhiya
Holding much religious and historic significance to the local Buddhist devotees, Kalutara Bodhiya is home to one of the oldest trees on the island with a story behind it. This Bo Tree was planted here back in the 2nd century when Buddhism was first introduced to the island. Furthermore, the Chaithya on the premises is one of the rare hollow Chaithyas in the world with murals depicting the life of Lord Buddha.
Lunugaha Estate

Designed by Geoffery Bawa, a world-renowned Sri Lankan architect, Lunugaha Estate is an amazing piece of architecture. This was the country home of Bawa which still holds old furniture and ornaments from back in the day. Known as the Father of Tropical Modernism, this home was carefully thought out to incorporate nature into the living space. Hotels like Avani Kalutara Resort also offer tours to Lunugha Estate for convenience.
Fa Hien Caves
These caves were discovered by a Chinese monk named Fa Hien during his travels in Sri Lanka. There is evidence to say that this was his dwelling place, however, there is also evidence to say the caves were once home to a prehistoric human from the Pleistocene era.
Richmond Castle
This mansion was once the residence of a Sri Lankan Mudliyar. Taking inspiration from castles in India and Britain, this Mudliyar wanted the mansion to look different, therefore, it was built in an Edwardian style. The castle is also surrounded by a lush garden overlooking the Kalu Ganga. Visiting this attraction is one of the most popular things to do in Kalutara.
