Tipped to be among Australia’s leading tourist hubs, Sydney may seem like an open book to frequent visitors. Here are some interesting facts on the Emerald City most tourists are unaware of.
The Coathanger
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is arguably one of the biggest landmarks in the city but this iconic overpass was unceremoniously dubbed “The Coathanger” by locals due to its arched design principles. As the widest spanning bridge on the planet, “The Coathanger” also holds the honour of being the highest steel arch bridge on the globe.
Creepy Crawlies
Australia is famous for its poisonous snakes and other dangerous insects but Sydney’s deadly Sydney Funnel Web Spider is among the worst. With the ability to kill a person in 15 minutes, the fangs of this spider are so powerful that they can tear through even human fingernails.
Beach and Bikini Capital
Although most tourists are aware of Sydney’s Bondi Beach, few know that the city is home to more than a hundred beaches in total while the city also holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest swimsuit group photoshoot in the world. This was due to over a thousand bikini-clad women posing for photos on Bondi Beach in 2007.
Sin City
While it may seem inconceivable today, Sydney’s crime rates were so high and corruption in the government so rife that it was dubbed Sin City during the latter half of the 20th century.
Celluloid Hotspot
Travellers based at the Oaks Sydney Hyde Park Suites or any similar Sydney City Hyde Park hotel not only have easy access to the Sydney Opera House but also the shooting locations of The Matrix, Independence Day and The Planet of the Apes among other Hollywood blockbusters.
